Who owns the metaverse?

Nobody owns the category. Specific companies own specific worlds, and what you own inside one depends entirely on which kind of world it is.

The answer

No single company owns the metaverse, because it is a category rather than a product. Individual worlds have owners: Roblox Corporation owns Roblox, Epic owns Fortnite, and the Decentraland and Sandbox worlds are governed by foundations and token holders. Land inside open worlds is owned by whoever holds the token, enforced by the chain. Land inside publisher-run worlds is licensed rather than owned, and the licence can be revoked.

§ 01

Two kinds of ownership

The distinction decides everything downstream — whether you can sell, whether you can be removed, and whether the platform can compete with you.

What you holdA token the chain enforces. Transferable without permission.A licence under terms of service. Revocable.
Who can remove youNobody, in principle. The parcel is yours while the chain exists. The publisher, at its discretion, with or without cause.
FootfallThousands of daily users. You must import your own audience.Tens of millions. The audience is already there.
The tradeReal ownership, no crowdReal crowd, no ownership
The trade nobody has resolved

Every serious operator faces the same choice: build where you own the ground and must import the audience, or build where the audience already is and the ground is not yours. Five years in, no platform offers both — and any pitch claiming otherwise is describing a roadmap rather than a world. What you can do is carry the customer relationship out on portable identity, so that when a publisher changes its terms you keep the one asset that mattered.
