Mixed reality

Definition

Mixed reality is the case in which virtual objects are not merely overlaid on the physical world but registered to it — occluded by real surfaces, resting on real tables, persisting in the same place across sessions. It is the point at which an augmented layer starts behaving like a place rather than a display.

§ 01

Why registration matters commercially

An overlay is advertising. An object that stays on a specific real shelf, that other people also see there, is inventory in a location — and location is the thing that has always carried rent. Registration is what turns AR from a channel into an estate.

§ 02

What is unresolved

Persistence is per-vendor: an anchor placed through one company's system is generally invisible through another's. Until anchors are portable, mixed-reality property is a licence from a device maker rather than a holding.
