UGC platform
A UGC platform is a virtual world whose content is built by its own users under a publisher's licence — Roblox, Fortnite Creative, Minecraft. It supplies vast footfall and a real payout rail to creators, in exchange for scarcity and tenure that the publisher grants and can revoke.
Why they won
They solved the condition nobody else could: population. A platform where the content is made by the players scales its catalogue with its audience rather than with its budget, which is why the largest virtual worlds by inhabitants are all UGC platforms and none are open worlds.
The permanent asymmetry
The publisher sets discovery, take rate and rules, and changes them. A creator on a UGC platform is a tenant with no lease. This is survivable — most retail is conducted on someone else's high street — provided you know that is what you are, and carry the customer relationship somewhere you control.
