Interoperability

Definition

Interoperability is the ability to carry an asset, an identity or a balance from one virtual world into another. It is rare in practice, usually claimed at the level of file formats rather than rights, and only meaningful when the receiving world is obliged to honour what arrives.

§ 01

Format is not interoperability

An avatar exported as a standard 3D file that a second world will not admit is a file, not a portable asset. The hard part has never been geometry; it is that the receiving platform has no commercial reason to accept an item it did not sell.

§ 02

What travels in practice

Identity and reputation travel more readily than objects, because they impose no obligation on the receiving world — it can recognise standing without hosting an asset. This is why portable identity is the realistic near-term form of interoperability and portable items are not.
